Item Academy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2016-01) Bradley, Debbie; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherAssisting Victims of Burglary, Robbery, and Armed Robbery! Victims’ Rights for Justice and Restitution! Whether a person has been the victim of a burglary or a robbery, the rights of that victim have been violated in much the same manner as a victim of an assault. Although the victim may have suffered any injury during the course of the burglary or robbery, there are certain rights in which all victims are entitled - namely justice and restitution.Item Academy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2016-04) Bradley, Debbie; Hamilton, Hadiya; Howard, Deborah; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherBroadening the Definition of Advocacy! RVAAM and VSPN! According to the FBI’s 2014 Crime Clock, there was a murder every 36.9 minutes, a rape every 4.5 minutes, and robbery every 1.6 minutes. Without a doubt, crime in America is an unsettling reality, and law enforcement personnel stand on the front lines in the fight, while lawyers and therapists stand ready to assist victims and their families. Thanks to heightened awareness, however, volunteers and advocacy professionals are increasingly being recognized as valuable assets in meeting the needs of victims and their families.Item Academy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2015-10) Bradley, Debbie; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherSometimes we may not understand why a victim focuses on a particular thing or issue when we believe there are more pressing matters to address. But being sensitive to all the needs of a victim is paramount if we want to be able to help them move forward to a life without abuse. As we know, a victim’s needs aren’t always black and white, and sometimes they may even appear to be irrational or illogical.Item Academy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2017-04) Bradley, Debbie; Hamilton, Hidaya; Howard, Deborah; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, AshleyOne of the most unique features of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland (RVAAM) is that it has a beginning but does not have an end. Rather, it is a cyclical organization and a source of renewable human energy. A clear cut representation of this pattern is its powerful alumni association, the Victim Services Professional Network (VSPN).!Item Academy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2016-10) Bradley, Debbie; Hamilton, Hadiya; Howard, Deborah; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherShame on Maryland!! Why do we continue to impose a statute of limitations on child sexual abuse? ! There is no doubt in anyone's mind that child sexual abuse and molestation is abhorrent and an embarrassment to our society. It must be questioned then, why is it so hard to change state laws when it comes to holding perpetrators accountable?Item The RVAAM Alumni Academy Forum Quarterly Newsletter(Roper Victim Assistance Academy, 2014-07) Bradley, Debbie; Lee, Michelle; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherHello Alumni!! After the long winter we have all endured this year, I’m sure you all are just as excited as I am to see the trees beginning to bloom, the flowers beginning to poke up through the earth, and to feel the warm rays of the sun.!Well with the warm weather comes lots of activities, such as the Roper Victim Assistance Academy. This is the 11th year of the Academy, can you believe it? Once again it will be held at the beautiful Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriottsville from June 1st-6th. I hope you will consider popping in at some point to show your support to the new students and to catch up with your fellow Alums. Just think back to your own experience at the Academy and how special it was to see Alumni there and to have the opportunity to network with them. Once again the Academy week will start off with the Ice Cream Social that Sunday evening, so please join the Academy faculty and staff in greeting the members of the 2014 class and share a bowl (or two) of ice-cream with them to help them start off the week on a “sweet” note. Just email Linda Fair at lfair@ubalt.eduto let her know if you plan on attending.!There are also lots of exciting things coming up for VSPN this year, so please keep your eyes and ears open for news! It looks like we are going to try another train and shopping excursion since so many people told us how much fun they had the last time, and once again we will be soliciting your help in identifying a family we can sponsor during the upcoming holiday season. VSPN will also offer a few trainings this year, as well as help out at the advanced training which will be held during this year’s Academy. It has been such a cold, cloudy winter, the sights and sounds of spring sure are a welcome sight!! Another welcome sight on my calendar is the Academy! Can you believe it is time to start recruiting new people to be a a part of this wonderful group? Think outside the box - are there any judges you know who might be interested in learning how to better meet victims’ needs? How about healthcare workers, such as hospital personnel? What about clergy or teachers? There are so many people who actually work with victims of crime that we often overlook when recruiting, so let’s make it a priority to not do so again this year. Go to www.rvaam.org and download some applications and give them to people you know who could benefit from this training. You might also want to give them a copy of the newsletter so they can read about others’ Academy experiences - nothing does a better job of convincing people the value of the Academy than to hear directly from those who have gone through it.Item The RVAAM Alumni Academy Forum: Quarterly Newsletter(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2014-04) Bradley, Debbie; Lee, Michelle; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfiefer, Heather; Roper Victim Assistance Academy of MarylandHappy Spring Alumni!!
