More specifically, it focuses on what parents believe about how their preschool children learn, their role in such learning, and the reading and math activities they make available to their children. Using a mixed-methods approach, we found that both Black and Latino parents expressed beliefs consistent with Lareau’s (2003) notion of concerted cultivation by engaging in educational activities with their children and purposefully providing educational materials for them. In addition, there were no significant differences between Black and Latino parents in the approaches they chose to foster their children’s reading and math skills. Future research can utilize the findings from this study to help promote the academic success of low-income children by building upon the beliefs of Black and Latino parents and the activities that they endorse.Item Elementary School Children’s Views About Homework(2016) Metzger, Shari R.; Sonnenschein, Susan; Thompson, Joy A.Item English and Spanish Language Predictors of Low Income Latino English Language Learners’ Early Academic Skills(2015) Sonnenschein, Susan; Metzger, Shari R.; Thompson, Joy A.; Baker, LindaItem Extending an Effective Classroom-Based Math Board Game Intervention to Preschoolers’ Homes(Digital Commons) Sonnenschein, Susan; Metzger, Shari R.; Dowling, Rebecca; Gay, Brittany; Simons, Cassandra L.The preschool years are a critical time for math development. Unfortunately, children from low-income backgrounds often enter kindergarten with lower math skills than middle-income peers, perhaps due to less math exposure at home. Few home-based math interventions are available for preschool age children; those that do exist are costly and difficult to implement. Interventions conducted in children’s schools using linear numeric board games developed by researchers have been particularly successful with low-income preschool children. Researchers have suggested they may be adapted for home-use by using commercially available board games, such as Chutes and Ladders, and teaching parents how to play. The two studies described in this paper explored the effectiveness of using Chutes and Ladders with a specialized counting procedure with Head Start families. Implementation proved to be challenging and children did not improve as much as in previous classroom-based interventions.Item Fostering Children’s Math Development(2018-05-09) Sonnenschein, Susan; Dowling, Rebecca; Metzger, Shari R.Item Fostering children’s math development(2018-05-09) Sonnenschein, Susan; Dowling, Rebecca; Metzger, Shari R.Item Low Income Black and Latino Parents’ Concerted Cultivation of Preschoolers’ Reading and Math Skills(2016) Sonnenschein, Susan; Metzger, Shari R.; Thompson, Joy A.; Gay, BrittanyItem Low Income Parents’ Socialization of Their Young Children’s Reading and Math Development(2011) Sonnenschein, Susan; Metzger, Shari R.; Thompson, Joy A.Item Making Slime and Growing Crystals: Children’s Engagement in Science Learning at Home(2019-03) Dowling, Rebecca; Gay, Brittany; Rennie, Allyson; Simons, Cassandra L.; Metzger, Shari R.; Sonnenschein, SusanItem The Nature of Children’s Home Engagement in Math Activities(2015) Simons, Cassandra L.; Metzger, Shari R.; Sonnenschein, Susan; Higgins, CharenceItem Parents' Beliefs about Children's Math Development and Children's Participation in Math Activities(Hindawi, 2012-10-10) Sonnenschein, Susan; Galindo, Claudia; Metzger, Shari R.; Thompson, Joy A.; Huang, Hui Chih; Lewis, HeatherThis study explored associations between parents’ beliefs about children’s development and children’s reported math activities at home. Seventy-three parents were interviewed about the frequency of their children’s participation in a broad array of math activities, the importance of children doing math activities at home, how children learn math, parents’ role in their children’s math learning, and parents’ own math skills. Although the sample consisted of African Americans, Chinese, Latino, and Caucasian parents in the United States, the majority were Chinese or Caucasian. Several important findings emerged from this study. Parents’ beliefs about math development and their role in fostering it were significantly related to children’s math activities. There was important variability and relatively limited participation of children in math activities at home. There were age-related differences in children’s engagement in math activities. Chinese and Caucasian parents showed somewhat similar beliefs about how children developed math. Although further research is needed to confirm the findings with a larger sample and to include measures of children’s math competencies, these findings are an important step for developing home-based interventions to facilitate children’s math skills.Item Parents’ of Low Income Preschoolers Socialization of Their Children’s Early Reading and Math Skills(2015-10) Sonnenschein, Susan; Metzger, Shari R.; Thompson, Joy A.Item Predictors of Head Start Children’s Scores on Authentic Kindergarten School Readiness Measures(2011) Sonnenschein, Susan; Thompson, Joy A.; Metzger, Shari R.; Baker, LindaItem The Relation Between Parental Beliefs about Math, Children’s Math Activities, and Early Math Skills(2011-03) Metzger, Shari R.
