Item Barriers to Distance Education: Perceptions of K-12 Educators(Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, 2003-01) Berge, Zane; Muilenburg, Lin Y.Instructional-use computers are continuing to migrate into the classrooms, with public schools reporting over half the installed base now located in classrooms. Still, education struggles with the rapid expansion of technology. This article reports on findings from a survey (n=2504) of respondents working in elementary, middle, and secondary schools (n=159). The survey concerns barriers perceived in distance education and is based on prior research involving content analyses of the case studies along with an extensive review of the literature. Demographic data about the respondents is reported for job functions, delivery systems, individual expertise in distance education, and organizational capabilities regarding distance education. Perceptions of these respondents concerning barriers to distance education reported, along with comparisons to respondents not working in K-12.Item Elementary Education Student Attitudes to Teaching Mathematics(Innovative Teaching, 2015-04-15) Alkhateeb, HaithamThis research study compares the attitudes toward teaching mathematics of ele- mentary education students using the 22-item Likert-type Mathematics Teaching Attitude Questionnaire (Nisbet, 1991). Data were collected from 153 freshman students majoring in elementary education (133 women and 20 men) whose ages ranged between 18 and 37 years (M=19.5yr., SD=2.1) and from 144 senior elementary education student teachers (128 women, 16 men) whose ages ranged between 21 and 52 years (M=22.8yr., SD=4.6). The freshman students majoring in elementary education were in the first or second semester of their undergradu- ate degree program and were planning to join the elementary teacher education program; whereas, the senior elementary education student teachers were in the final semester of their elementary teacher education program. Analyses of the responses to the questionnaire by the freshman students majoring in elementary education and the senior elementary education student teachers were carried out to assess and compare their attitudes to teaching mathematics. The senior elementary education student teachers scored significantly differently from the freshman students majoring in elementary education on two of the four scales of the Mathematics Teaching Attitude Questionnaire reflecting overall lower Anxi- ety, and higher Confidence and Enjoyment.Item Strategies to Improve Third Grade Comprehension of Non-Fiction Text(2021-05-13) Hunsinger, Amy; Masters of EducationThe purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of the text annotation strategy would positively affect the reading comprehension of a selected group of third grade students. The measurement tool was an online assessment from the website Newsela.com. The study involved a pretest/posttest design. The hypothesis of this study was supported and there was a significant difference in the pre and posttest results (mean difference= -1.176, t=-3.213, p <.005). The results of this brief intervention suggested explicitly teaching text annotation can improve comprehension of non-fiction texts. Study of further applications is warranted since comprehension of non-fiction texts can impact learning in many subject areas.
