- Item#1ReasonWhy: Game Communities and the Invisible Woman(Foundations of Digital Games, 2014-04) Blodgett, Bridget M.; Salter, AnastasiaAs Cliff Bleszinski [6] states in his blog post the video game community has its own type of religious police charged with enforcing a doctrine regarding gender representation within the gaming community. From the difficulties faced by Anita Skareesian to the resignation of Jennifer Hepler, women who are visible within the industry regularly face threats from the very people who claim to be their entertainment comrades. With the rise of the #1ReasonWhy hashtag on Twitter in 2012, the experiences of women who aren’t in gaming community’s spotlight were also brought to the forefront. This paper uses a thematic analysis of tweets made between November 26th - 29th in the #1ReasonWhy to examine how the explicit and implicit threats of violence, rape, and harassment have manifested within the working world of game development. Through examination of these tweets the authors will show how these threats both from the general gaming community and inside the office workspace shape the experiences of women and continue the decades long cycle of limited participation by women. The authors point out how the cultural dialogue about the potential good games offer to our society may be outweighed by the hostile community climate which places those who could benefit most at risk.

- ItemThe 2018 Long-Term Budget Outlook(CBO Report, 2018-06) Finance and Economics; Finance and EconomicsAt 78 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), federal debt held by the public is now at its highest level since shortly after World War II. If current laws generally remained unchanged, CBO projects, growing budget deficits would boost that debt sharply over the next 30 years; it would approach 100 percent of GDP by the end of the next decade and 152 percent by 2048. That amount would be the highest in the nation’s history by far. Moreover, if lawmakers changed current law to maintain certain policies now in place—preventing a significant increase in individual income taxes in 2026, for example—the result would be even larger increases in debt. The prospect of large and growing debt poses substantial risks for the nation and presents policymakers with significant challenges. In this report, CBO presents its projections of federal spending, revenues, deficits, and debt for the next three decades and describes some possible consequences of those budgetary outcomes. This report’s projections are consistent with the 10-year baseline budget and economic projections that CBO published in the spring of 2018. They extend most of the concepts underlying those projections for an additional 20 years, and they reflect the macroeconomic effects of projected fiscal policy over that 30-year period. Altogether, they constitute the agency’s extended baseline projections. CBO’s 10-year and extended baseline projections are not predictions of budgetary outcomes. Rather, they represent the agency’s best assessment of future spending, revenues, deficits, and debt under the assumption that current laws generally remain unchanged. They also give lawmakers a point of comparison from which to measure the effects of proposed legislation.

- Item30 Days on Route 30: A Search for Nostalgia on America's Main Street(2016) Kunz, Emily; Fioramonti, Joseph; Pointer, Amy; Simon, Julie; University of Baltimore. School of Communications Design; University of Baltimore. Master of Fine Arts in Integrated DesignThe road trip continues to be a central idea in the American collective psyche, conjuring emotions like "freedom" and "joyous abandon." Multiple scholars have argued that the road trip’s appeal is in its blend of a number of different concepts like nostalgia and Americana; in art, literature, and cinema, the road trip awakens in viewers and readers the desire to reclaim a past that may or may not have truly existed. In the summer of 2015, I set out on a project to document a 30-day road trip on old US Route 30 from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Astoria, Oregon, in which I sought to explore the availability of nostalgia and Americana through images, conversations, and real-world experiences. Using a blend of videography, photography, social media, and narration, I recounted my experience on one of America’s oldest and most-forgotten highways. As I argue in this paper, I learned that nostalgia and Americana are largely what we make of it and not simply concepts to be “discovered” on an open road. The true appeal of the road trip is in what we learn about ourselves as the road moves beneath our feet.
- Item8-Bit Goes to the Movies(Wide Screen, 2016-09) Meikle, KyleSince 2013, the YouTube channel Cinefix has offered its followers near-monthly installments of 8-Bit Cinema, a series of short videos in which blockbuster movies like Titanic and Frozen are reimagined as old school videogames. This essay asks why viewers are drawn to videogame adaptations that they can’t play, suggesting eight different ways that audiences (and scholars) might process 8-Bit Cinema—intertextually, interactively, and otherwise. The appeals of 8-Bit Cinema, whose views range somewhere in the millions, would seem to rely as much on the audience’s desire for recycled media as for recycled content, compounding a nostalgia for outmoded texts with a nostalgia for outmoded technologies.

- ItemAbnormal Stock Performance of Late Filing Firms: Additional Investigation(SSRN, 2006) Pevzner, MikhailThis paper examines whether the previously observed future under performance of the portfolio of the late 10-K filing firms exists in post EDGAR period and any reasons for the observed under-performance. I find that there is some evidence of under-performance of the portfolio of the late filing firms. I further find that in post-EDGAR period, the late filing firms have higher de-listing probabilities and that the observed under-performance is driven by the future negative stock performance of the sample of the de-listed late filing firms. I conclude that, in post-EDGAR period the market generally correctly values late filing firms.
- ItemAbstracting Evidence: Documentary Process in the Service of Fictional Gameworlds(2017-07) Oldenburg, AaronDocumentary filmmaking and the design of videogames have often converged in the form of “docugames”, games that aspire to the form of documentary. This paper looks at a related strategy for creating content and gameplay: that of using documentary processes, such as interviews and on-location evidence collection, for games that involve varying levels of fictionalization. It will discuss abstract approaches to the idea of realism in docugames as well as traditional documentary film. It will also detail an original design project that begins with documentary evidence collection and ends with an impressionistic fictionalized narrative. It will discuss the benefits of this approach, and the seemingly paradoxical creation of a form of realism through fictionalization. Playtesting results of this experiment will be detailed and related paths will be suggested for continued exploration.

- ItemAcademy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2016-10) Bradley, Debbie; Hamilton, Hadiya; Howard, Deborah; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherShame on Maryland!! Why do we continue to impose a statute of limitations on child sexual abuse? ! There is no doubt in anyone's mind that child sexual abuse and molestation is abhorrent and an embarrassment to our society. It must be questioned then, why is it so hard to change state laws when it comes to holding perpetrators accountable?
- ItemAcademy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2016-01) Bradley, Debbie; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherAssisting Victims of Burglary, Robbery, and Armed Robbery! Victims’ Rights for Justice and Restitution! Whether a person has been the victim of a burglary or a robbery, the rights of that victim have been violated in much the same manner as a victim of an assault. Although the victim may have suffered any injury during the course of the burglary or robbery, there are certain rights in which all victims are entitled - namely justice and restitution.
- ItemAcademy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2015-10) Bradley, Debbie; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, Ashley; Pfeifer, HeatherSometimes we may not understand why a victim focuses on a particular thing or issue when we believe there are more pressing matters to address. But being sensitive to all the needs of a victim is paramount if we want to be able to help them move forward to a life without abuse. As we know, a victim’s needs aren’t always black and white, and sometimes they may even appear to be irrational or illogical.
- ItemAcademy Forum: Continuing the Message of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy(Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland, 2017-04) Bradley, Debbie; Hamilton, Hidaya; Howard, Deborah; Gethers, Keith; Fundack, AshleyOne of the most unique features of the Roper Victim Assistance Academy of Maryland (RVAAM) is that it has a beginning but does not have an end. Rather, it is a cyclical organization and a source of renewable human energy. A clear cut representation of this pattern is its powerful alumni association, the Victim Services Professional Network (VSPN).!

RVAAM and VSPN! According to the FBI’s 2014 Crime Clock, there was a murder every 36.9 minutes, a rape every 4.5 minutes, and robbery every 1.6 minutes. Without a doubt, crime in America is an unsettling reality, and law enforcement personnel stand on the front lines in the fight, while lawyers and therapists stand ready to assist victims and their families. Thanks to heightened awareness, however, volunteers and advocacy professionals are increasingly being recognized as valuable assets in meeting the needs of victims and their families.
- ItemAccessible Web Typography for the Visually Impaired(2018-05) McCoy, Erica; Summers, Kathryn; Kohl, Deborah; Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Science, Information Arts, and Technologies; Interaction Design & Information ArchitectureBackground: Visual impairments affect millions of people worldwide. Accessible web typography is important in ensuring online legibility for this diverse group of users to help them maintain their independence. However, existing typographic guidelines are based heavily on best practices, with supported research based largely on printed typography, and rarely considers the needs of visually impaired users. The purpose of this research is to investigate which elements of typography have the most impact on visually impaired users in an effort to work towards more accessible typographic guidelines. Method: An in-depth analysis of existing online typography trends found that even with copious resources available web designers are often not adhering to typographic guidelines. This analysis helped build a solid foundation for experimental research with visually impaired users by providing insight into how typography is actually being used on the web. In response, both line height and font size were tested for their effects on simulated macular degeneration. A second experiment tested line height across three other simulated visual impairment types. Results: This study did not show significant effects on legibility for simulated macular degeneration based on font size, although error rate was nearly twice as high for smaller font sizes. Increased line height did significantly reduce the error rate for simulated macular degeneration. When increased line height was tested across other simulated visual impairments, the improvment was not statistically significant. However, this study should be repeated with a within-subjects design before these results are considered fully reliable. Conclusions: As past research has indicated, there may not be one solution for typography that fits in in regards to visually impaired users. Accomodations for the needs of one user may work against the needs of another user. With online access essential to daily tasks, though, it’s important to consider how visually impaired users interact with the web and continue to explore how enhancements to typography can benefit the distinct needs of these users.
- ItemAccounting Conservatism in Fraud Firms: An Empirical Investigation(2008) Jones, Keith L; Krishnan, Gopal V; Pevzner, Mikhail; Sengupta, ParthaWe examine whether Ball and Shivakumar (2006) and Basu (1997) models of conservatism identify fraud firms as anti-conservative. We show that both models do so to some extent, but Ball and Shivakumar model results are stronger. We further show that these results are driven by firms committing largest frauds as a percentage of firms' assets. Our results are important to academics who use conservatism measures in their studies, and to policy makers who seek to assess usefulness of conservatism to capital markets.
