Abstract

Essay I wrote this paper for my Spanish Literature class. I always try and revise my papers as much as possible, but somehow this one was different. When at last time to hand in the final draft, I knew that I had genuinely put in my best work instead of knowing that I really could have edited more. The writing process had almost been (gasp) enjoyable! I first read an excerpt from Lazarillo de Tormes in middle school, and can remember acting out the part of the ciego (blind man, one of Lazarillo's masters). It was natural, therefore, to choose to write about this story. The other work, a play called Retablo de las Maravillas by Cervantes, fascinated me with its story within a story and Cervantes' writing style. Before I could even pinpoint why, I felt like the two stories were connected. The process of discovery is what I like most about writing papers, continually working on the problem of refining the link and thesis until it is clear. I would like to thank my teacher, Professor Cortés-Conde, for her guidance and patience, listening to me talk out the ideas in my head and magically make sense of them.
