Abstract

The thesis presents the structure and methodology needed for creating the author's original work, Chastened, an original screenplay. Chastened is an original story about a white girl in the mid-nineteenth century who transforms into a black girl after murdering a slave's infant. The main character is forced to experience the struggles of slavery and all of the obstacles that it entails. Although there is a surreal aspect to the screenplay, the main character's experience and the other characters' experience are realistic and tell the untold stories of slaves who are long forgotten. The plot and characters come from the author's creativity and research of films and literature. A thorough examination of the important aspects of story along with models and techniques were utilized in creating the screenplay. The literature review included contains sources about the use of plot, character, development and conflict.
