Abstract

The role of pesticides in the control of large carnivore predators is examined. Predator control methods are compared using the following criteria: effectiveness, selectiveness, economics, safety, environmental impact, regulatory control, and humaneness. The use of predator control for the protection of livestock and wildlife and as a tool in the reduction and suppression of epizootic diseases is also reviewed. Pesticides can play an important role in the prophylactic control of coyotes. Protection of livestock and wildlife, through the control of predators, under certain conditions constitutes a valid management program.
