Abstract

Tonneau (2001) has provided an important critical analysis of equivalence and related concepts in behavior analysis. He quite rightly focuses on functional equivalence, but his emphasis on stimulus-stimulus correlations and respondent conditioning presents some difficulties, because respondent conditioning should not be interpreted as a variety of stimulus substitution and because common responses to different stimuli can emerge from operant as well as respondent contingencies.
