Abstract
Early on it was recognized that second-order processes could mimic the behavior of a third-order nonlinear response. Indeed, to efficiently generate the third harmonic of a laser, two second-order processes are commonly cascaded, namely, second-order harmonic generation followed by sum-frequency generation. Similarly, a Kerr-type nonlinear effect has been observed recently in both bulk and waveguide geometries.
