Item ADHD and Motivation(2010-05) Barnes, Amanda; Masters of EducationThe purpose of this study was to determine whether an arts integrated enrichment curriculum would have a greater increase on achievement over a direct instruction curriculum for students with ADHD. The findings showed higher achievement when using the enrichment curriculum than when the direct method was utilized. This indicates that for students with ADHD providing them with the opportunity to interact more the subject matter produced higher achievement. Research in the area of attention and achievement in ADHD students should continue given that there are more students diagnosed with ADHD each year and that classroom teachers are faced with the task of engaging each student and helping him/her reach his/her full academic potential.Item Development and preliminary testing of tablet application to increase reading motivation and summarization for adolescent students with ADHD(2015-08) Pinna, Joanne E.; Holman, Lucy; University of Baltimore. School of Information Arts and Technologies; University of Baltimore. Master of Science in Information Design and Information ArchitectureChildren with ADHD have a variety of difficulties with reading, including phonetics, reading comprehension, distractibility, lack of reading organizational skills and a low ability to summarize. This study created a tablet-based reading application designed to enhance their capabilities in developing a multimodal approach to reading. Participants who demonstrated difficulty in completing a reading task in a book exhibited a positive outcome on wanting to complete the reading and tasks in the application and complete their summary writing. The application encourages participants to read, answer questions about what was read about the text, record the answers, access notes written, and it aids in summarization of collected sequential information. A rubric score were used to compare summary writing differences after reading from the book and reading with the application. It was determined that there wasn't significant total score differences between the two, but the rubric score demonstrated areas of improvement.Item The Link Between Adolescent Depression, Young Adult Alcohol And Marijuana Use, And The Role Of Mental Health Services(2008) Bryant, Sharronne Woolford; Sydnor, Kim Dobson; Public Health and Policy; Doctor of Public HealthAdolescent depression is an increasingly significant public health problem. Depressed adolescents are at greater risk for negative young adult outcomes, such as depression continuity and development of substance use disorders. This study examined the relationships between adolescent depression and young adult depression, problematic alcohol use, and marijuana use. The influence of mental health services on depression and substance use was also investigated. Mental health services have the potential to alter depressed adolescents' trajectories and deter negative transitions into young adulthood. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were performed using secondary data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health Survey (Add Health), which examined adolescent health related behaviors and young adult outcomes during a six-year period. The initial sample consisted of 12 to 16 year old adolescents (n=6836), who participated in all three waves. Significant findings showed depressed adolescents were three times more likely to transition into depressed young adults. Depressed adolescents were less susceptible to increased problematic alcohol use and co-occurrence over time. Depressed adolescents who did not receive mental health services had higher levels of impairment that continued and/or elevated in young adulthood. Overall, this study highlights the diverse and multifaceted pathways linking adolescent depression to young adult alcohol use and co-occurrence. The findings underscore the importance of examination of sub-group variations, particularly gender and adolescent alcohol use patterns, to clarify divergent relationships between depression and substance use outcomes. Implications include increased knowledge about multiple depressive pathways and need for gender-specific intervention strategies.
