Item Group Mixing: Athletes and Non-Athletes at College(2016-12-15) McCloskey, Kevin; Masters of EducationThe purpose of this study was to examine college student’s attitudes about events outside of their social circle. In the experiment, participants received a pre-test survey, attended an outgroup activity, and then completed a post-test survey. There was no significant statistical difference between the athletes’ and non-athletes’ post-event rating of their enjoyment of the events or feelings that members of their in-groups might also be willing to attend similar events in the future. Therefore, the null hypothesis was retained. Research in this area should continue to encourage students to attend a more diverse array of events offered on their campus.Item Re-Presenting Black Masculinities in Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me(2018-04) Aaouinti-Haris, Asmaa; Zaki, Hoda; Arts and Humanities; HumanitiesTa-Nehisi Coates’s memoir and letter to his son Between the World and Me (2015)—published shortly after the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement—provides a rich and diverse representation of African American male life which is closely connected with contemporary United States society. This study explores how Coates represents and explains black manhood as well as how he defines his own identity as being excluded from United States society, yet as being central to the nation. Coates’s definition of masculinity is analyzed by focusing on his representations of boyhood and fatherhood. By analyzing Coates’s projection of his own role as a man and as a father as well as his complex and multifaceted representations of black manhood, I demonstrate how Coates promotes a caring masculinity and, most importantly, how he presents resistance to hegemonic notions of masculinity. Thus, the goal of this study is to examine the ways in which Coates asserts models for progressive masculinities through his portrayals of boyhood and fatherhood. Coates’s depiction of his adolescence and of black youth in the streets of Baltimore, and his descriptions of fatherhood, particularly of his own role as a father and the depiction of his parents, are key in assessing Coates’s rendering of a caring masculinity.Item Unequal Representation and Gender Stereotypes in Image Search Results for Occupations(ACM, 2015-04-18) Kay, Matthew; Matuszek, Cynthia; Munson, Sean A.Information environments have the power to affect people's perceptions and behaviors. In this paper, we present the results of studies in which we characterize the gender bias present in image search results for a variety of occupations. We experimentally evaluate the effects of bias in image search results on the images people choose to represent those careers and on people's perceptions of the prevalence of men and women in each occupation. We find evidence for both stereotype exaggeration and systematic underrepresentation of women in search results. We also find that people rate search results higher when they are consistent with stereotypes for a career, and shifting the representation of gender in image search results can shift people's perceptions about real-world distributions. We also discuss tensions between desires for high-quality results and broader societal goals for equality of representation in this space.
