Abstract

There is a significant drop in motivation in students as they travel from elementary school into middle school. This research sought to examine whether including a group of sixth students in a small remediation group would increase their motivation in Science class, particularly when explicitly using strategies to increase academic motivation, including choice boards. Motivation is expected to impact grades. Both groups consisted of 14 students. There was no significant difference between the mean interim grade of the experimental group (Mean = 77.21, SD = 14.41) and the control group (Mean = 74.43, SD = 13.52) [t (26) = 0.53, p = .60]. Small time window and stress involved with COVID-19 may have impacted results. Future research should examine student opinions of most helpful strategies to increase motivation.
