Abstract

This is an exploration of a hypnagogic state. The player explores the space through two-dimensional movement through a procedural environment. The hallucinations follow rules for appearance and behavior that work off one another. Hypnagogic hallucinations are those that play on the inside of your eyelids as you are going to sleep. This is an attempt to capture the ephemeral visuals of the experience and explore this state as a semi-persistent world. The moving entities in the game world were drawn from observation, I shined various patterns of light into my eyes, closed them and observed the patterns, then drew them. The coded behaviors attempt to recreate the flickering morphing of these hallucinations.
