dc.description.abstractIn terrestrial systems, it is usually not practical to completely optimize the dispersion map because one must make use of the already existing fiber plant. We examine the performance of the return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return- to-zero (CSRZ) formats in dispersion maps that are not slope matched, as is commonly the case in the installed fiber base. We find that for such dispersion maps, the CSRZ format outperforms the RZ format.
