Words Into Action requires evidence of disaster risk reduction (DRR) approaches and solid communication of that evidence through effective engagement with everyone in the science-policy-society ecosystem: policy makers, scientists and researchers, the private and non-profit sectors, the media, and ordinary people. Through our Disasters Avoided project, we are demonstrating the benefits of proactive DRR for everyone, including through the effective use of Earth observations, so that no one is left behind. Examples profiled here are wildland fires in Australia, cyclones in Bangladesh, and earthquakes across the east coast of the U.S.A. They show the importance of compiling, verifying, and sharing compelling good news of potential disasters which could have happened, but did not, because action was proactively taken based on knowledge and sound Earth observations data—as well as work remaining. We hope that these examples will inspire continuing action, based on repeated words, across all parts of society, including collaborative activities between Earth scientists and policy makers.
