The purpose of this study was to determine whether the implementation of fluency lessons using poetry would positively affect the reading fluency of the students in the researcher’s second grade classroom. The measurement tool was the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, or DIBELS. The study involved the use of a pretest and a posttest to compare the fluency rate of students over six weeks. The hypothesis of this study was supported and there was a significant difference between pre and posttest scores. Although this difference could be attributed to various factors, the research suggests that lessons using poetry may be used to help increase the fluency rate of students.en_US
