Nobody's Talking: Transgender and Intersex Topics in Sex Education

Abstract

I’ve been interested in sexuality and sex education for some time, but it wasn’t until Dr. Mel Lewis’s course Gender Identity, Expression, and the Body that I became interested in intersex issues and their representation in sex education curricula. I was surprised and upset to realize how much information I had been lacking until that course. I am proud of this paper not only because it was the largest and most comprehensive academic project I had taken on at that point in my education, but also because I was able to practice using my academic knowledge and passions to make policy recommendations with the potential to impact the lives of kids and teenagers in very concrete ways. I am very thankful to Dr. Mel Lewis for supporting me in this project and the overall course, and for encouraging me (and countless other students) to think critically, intersectionally, and holistically.
