We study the labour market dynamics of men and women in El Salvador and Nicaragua, focusing on the factors that help men and women move into an advantageous labour market state from an unfavourable state. We consider ‘advantageous’ states to be formal salaried employees and self-employed workers with a decent income or a successful and growing firm. Among our findings are that education and access to public services such as utilities promote transitions into advantageous states.en_US

This research project involved collaboration between the authors, FIDEG in Nicaragua, and the Fundación Salvadoreno para el Desarrollo Económico y Social (FUSADES) in El Salvador. The research team at FUSADES included Margarita Beneke de Sanfelú, Lidia Elizabeth Vázquez, José Andrés Oliva-Cepeda, and Susana Maria Delgado-Vides. The research team at FIDEG included Enrique Alaniz and Gloria Carrión. We are grateful for useful suggestions from Carolina Robino and Alejandro Martínez-Cuenca. The methodology and preliminary discussions of the results presented in this paper can be found in Beneke de Sanfelú et al. (2015) and Alaniz, Carrion and Gindling (2015).en_US
