Abstract
The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine if poverty negatively impacts
participation in extracurricular activities based on student responses. A 5 question survey was
given anonymously to 279 middle school students to determine if their perspectives supported
research. Results of this descriptive study were not in alignment
with research. There were not a
significant number of students who provided cost as the reason why they do not participate,
which would have supported the research. Research on this topic should continue because it has
been established in previous studies
that poverty does have a negative impact on participation of
extracurricular activities.
