The Effects of Organizational Skills Instruction on the Academic Success of Sixth Grade Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether after-school organizational skills instruction would positively affect both the organizational skills and academic grades of sixth grade students who struggle in both areas. Students were measured using an organizational skills checklist consisting of five criteria as well as the students’ official grades on report cards and interim reports. The study compared data over the course of a five-week period in which organizational skills were assessed a total of ten times and grades were examined before, during, and after the intervention. No significant increase in academic grades was noted; however, there was a significant increase in organizational skills. Results can be attributed to a number of factors. Further research in the area of organizational skills, including the causes and effects when these skills are lacking as well as the best way to teach these skills, is necessary for educators to ensure the academic success of all learners.
