This paper traces the history of Maxim's Caterers Limited as an illustrative case study of growth of private industry in Hong Kong's economic development. As Hong Kong industrialized in the 1950s and 1960s, development ultimately transformed Hong Kong once again into a major entrepôt. The social consequences of development are analyzed and compared to mainland China's development and consequences. Despite both sides largely benefiting from development, this paper finds that Hong Kong's influence will continue to be sidelined as just another Chinese city.en
