| dc.description | Students in BIO 340 (Ecology and Evolution) are assigned to review primary literature on any ecological or evolutionary topic. This assignment allows them to delve deeper into a topic we may have touched on in class or to learn about a topic we didn’t have time to cover. Maddy’s paper on “Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Sexual Selection Methods in Birds Inform Mate Choice by Serving as Indicators for Mate Quality” was very well written and thoroughly researched. Sexual selection has been a popular paper topic throughout my years of teaching this course and Maddy’s review is certainly one of the best I’ve read! | dc.description.abstract | I wrote “Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Sexual Selection Methods in Birds Inform Mate Choice by Serving as Indicators for Mate Quality” in Fall of 2017 while taking a class entitled Ecology and Evolution. My professor, Dr. Cynthia Kicklighter, spoke about the brilliant displays of Bird’s of Paradise, which prompted me to further explore sexual selection in birds. Throughout this process I learned about sexual selection methods that I would not have come up with in a million years. What I found was bizarre and attests to the versatility of life on earth. My research greatly improved my understanding of bird mate choice and never failed to be interesting, which is why I am so excited to share it with non-scientists and scientists alike!
