dc.description.abstract | This study explores the role of family partners, peer professionals with lived experiences of raising a child with behavioral health needs, and their value in primary and community-care based mental health services for young children aged 0–8 years. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with staff, leadership, and caregiver participants (n = 38) from two early childhood mental health programs and analyzed using thematic analysis. Five interdependent themes emerged: (1) the centrality of lived experience to the family partner role; (2) the importance of the family partner in family engagement and relationship building; (3) the value added by the family partner in navigating systems; (4) the ability of the family partner to build skills and empower caregivers; (5) the role of the family partner in alleviating caregiver stress and other mental health concerns. Adapting and expanding the role of family partners will improve effective mental health care for children and their caregivers.
dc.description.sponsorship | Project Linking Actions with Unmet Needs in Children’s Health (LAUNCH) was an initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Massachusetts Multi-City Young Children’s Mental Health System of Care Project (SOC) was an initiative of the Boston Public Health Commission. The LAUNCH/MYCHILD model of early childhood mental health integration of behavioral health into primary care and community-based care described in this article was created and first evaluated in Boston from 2009-2015, and was later expanded into additional Massachusetts communities from 2015-2019. Both LAUNCH and SOC were funded by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), (Grant Numbers 1H79SM059334 and 1U79SM062467). Evaluation studies of both programs were carried out by Northeastern University’s Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research, Boston, MA. The authors of this paper would like to acknowledge the families who agreed to having their data utilized for the evaluation studies, LAUNCH and SOC family partner and clinician teams, the participating community service agencies, the partnering primary care practices, the local health departments, and the Massachusetts Partnership for Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMHMatters.org). The authors are especially grateful to the caregivers, staff, and agency leaders who participated in this qualitative study and who generously and candidly shared their perspectives on the programs.
