| dc.description.abstract | In this introduction to The Sociology of Families: Key Debates and Contending Perspectives, we briefly describe how the major changes in family life and couple relationships and the resulting diversity of topics for the sociology of families are part of major long-term processes of social change. Across the globe, families have become more diverse over time, with people increasingly living alone or apart from their partners, choosing not to become spouses or parents, and challenging the limits of heteronormativity and international borders. The book is organized around six thematic areas in family sociology considered to be at the center of academic debates: the institution of marriage, the nature of care work, parenting in post-separation families and in non-heteronormative families, gender-related family policies, and migrating families. Under each theme. two chapters address different related issues in various countries or regions, providing empirical and theoretical insights to promote a broader understanding of the phenomenon. | |
