Abstract
An analysis of a capacitive impedance probe for measuring electron density in the lower ionosphere is presented. The method employed accounts for the effects of the ion sheath surrounding the rocket probe and the collisions of oscillating electrons with neutral particles. The applicability of the method and theory developed is illustrated by utilizing indicated ionospheric models to determine typical impedance characteristics of the probe.
