Many physical phenomena can be described by partial differential equations which can be discretized to form systems of linear equations. We apply the finite difference method to the Poisson equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, which yields a system of linear equations with a large sparse system matrix. We implement pMatlab code which utilizes the conjugate gradient method to solve this system. We do not recommend the use of pMatlab at this time as we find that it is very limited, its implementation is highly complex and the results are inconsistent.en_US
This report was done as a project for Math 627, Introduction to Parallel Computing, during the Fall 2014 semester. I would like to thank the instructor, Dr. Matthias Gobbert, for his guidance on this assignment as well as my classmate, Jonathan Graf, with whom I worked on testing pMatlab code on the HPCF cluster maya. I would also like to acknowledge financial support as a Research Assistant with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Consulting (CIRC) at UMBC. The hardware used in the computational studies is part of the UMBC High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF). The facility is supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation through the MRI program (grant nos. CNS{0821258) and NS{1228778) and the SCREMS program (grant no. DMS{0821311), with additional substantial support from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). See www.umbc.edu/hpcf for more information on HPCF and the projects using its resources.en_US
