dc.descriptionFrom the Faculty Nominator: Modern Physics (e.g. Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Particles and Nuclei) covers some of the strangest and most fascinating aspects of the world in which we live. To supplement the survey of these subjects that we undertake in Phy 220 (Modern Physics), the Department of Physics and Astronomy also asks each student to write an in-depth research paper on a topic they find particularly interesting. The capture and display of three-dimensional information on a two-dimensional surface, or holography, is a rather narrow field with wide- ranging implications, from security measures on credit cards (check your wallets!) to mass data storage. Jennifer Jordan ('11) wrote an excellent examination of the history, physics, and applications of transmission holography, and I am exceedingly pleased that it has been accepted for this edition of Verge magazine.en_US
