Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that contribute to the attrition rate of beginning teachers new to the teaching profession. This was determined by conducting a survey of teachers who had been teaching fewer than two years. In order to determine the impact of various support factors that were believed to contribute to teacher retention, a survey was administered to 70 first and second year teachers in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools‟ Right Start program. It was found that there were differences based on gender, residency in the district, level of instruction, type of teacher certificate, and the strength of teacher support within the school that had an impact on the retention of new teachers in the school district.
Research relating to teacher retention and attrition rates should continue with emphasis on specific ways to support new teachers in order to prevent them from leaving the profession.
