This report summarizes and synthesizes extant research that is relevant to the design and evaluation of digital interactive objects that are used as a support for articulation drills, which is a common mode of speech therapy for children and adults. This report sketches the future direction of planned dissertation work, that will focus on the support of speech therapy for children, which is presently deployed via "playful interaction", albeit typically using "low-tech" toys and props. In the proposed system, tangible user interfaces (TUIs) will be combined with automatic speech recognition (ASR) to create the plaything that will be used in the context of a game that supports speech intervention.
