Cultural landscapes are dynamic resources that reflect layers of history and change over time. They require management strategies that preserve historic character, protect landscape characteristics, and monitor features that reflect the significance of the landscape. The hypothesis for this thesis is: What types of landscape change can alter the historic character of the vernacular landscape and what process can be used to develop management strategies for the preservation of vernacular landscapes? This thesis represents a source point or collection of landscape thinking on the management of change in vernacular landscapes. Thesis research included a literature review of existing documentation on change and cultural landscapes, an examination of case studies, and an application of my findings at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, San Diego County, California. My research provides a framework to protect and manage the park’s cultural landscape. I recommend completion of comprehensive cultural and natural resource inventories, the use of preservation standards when developing management strategies, a revision of the park’s General Plan based on identified resources values, an approach to address impacts to resources as a result of the 2003 Cedar Fire, a method to assess alternative management strategies, and resource-specific preservation techniques. Based on this process, I advocate an integrated approach to the development of management strategies, which incorporates common goals and treatment objectives for both natural and cultural resources and provides the opportunity for interpretation that enhances visitor understanding of this complex and vital cultural landscape.en_US
