We compared the relative effectiveness of the JCM and VIE theories as predictors of performance and the mediating role of employee engagement in federal employees (N = 42,020). VIE was a stronger predictor of performance and rewards than JCM. Engagement fully mediated the relationship between JCM and performance.en
