We report preliminary results from a socio-technical analysis of scientific collaboration situated in physical anthropology research. We analyze the two-layer structure of the collaboration: one loosely coupled through shared access and use of scientific equipment, and one tightly coupled through shared creative development of research questions, data analysis and interpretation. We conclude with implications for both process and technology support.en
