Item The Effect of Reading Intervention on Middle School Students Reading Scores(2011-07) Benshaw, Alexandria; Masters of EducationThe impact of a reading intervention program, Performance and Reading (PAR), on seventh and eighth grade students’ performance on the Gates-MacGinitie reading test (GMRT) and the reading portion of the Maryland School Assessments (MSA) is the focus of this study. The groups were made up of seventh and eighth grade students taking PAR reading intervention. The students were from a public school and both groups received the same instruction. Data for the research was collected over an entire school year. The results of the study showed PAR intervention has a positive influence on eighth grade students’ MSA test results. Further research could be conducted to explore if PAR intervention affects Gates-MacGinitie assessments over a longer period of time.Item The Effect of Teaching Phonics and Phonemic Awareness Training to Adolescent Struggling Readers(2013-12) Hardesty, Stephanie; Masters of EducationThe purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of teaching phonics and phonemic awareness training to adolescent struggling readers. The measurement tool was the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). This study involved the use of a pretest/posttest design to compare data prior to the implementation of the reading intervention, System 44, to data after the intervention was complete (one to two years). Achievement gains were not significant, though results could be attributable to a number of intervening factors. Research in the area of high school reading remediation should continue given the continued disagreement over best practices and the new standards that must be met per the Common Core.
