Abstract

This research study addresses the trends and determinants of birth rate in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The measures of crude birth rate (CBR), adolescent fertility rate and total fertility rate (TFR) are used as primary issues in analyzing the birth rate. The source of data was the World Bank Database. The statistical methods which are used for analyzing the data are Pearson correlation coefficient, scatter diagram with fitted model- polynomial model, and multiple regression analysis. The variables which are considered for assessing the strength of the influence on the birth rate are: life expectancy, mortality rate under age 5, urban population, total population, gross enrollment ratio at tertiary level. The results provide a rapid decline in crude birth rate (CBR), adolescent fertility rate and total fertility rate (TFR) during the period 1978 to 2014. The rates at the latest year, 2014 are 20.14 of CBR, and 2.8 of TFR. Among the selected variables, the life expectancy, child mortality, education (gross enrollment at tertiary levels), and urban population are found to have strong association with birth rates.
