Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of Fountas and Pinnell’s Leveled Literacy Intervention with Targeted Title One students in grades 1 and 2 is effective in increasing students’ reading levels. The study used a quasi-experimental design. The population was chosen using convenience sampling and the instrument utilized for both assessments was the Fountas and Pinnell benchmark assessment system. The results of the study showed that there was not a significant difference in achievement of increased reading levels between Targeted Title One students who participated in the intervention and students who were reading below grade level but who did not participate in Leveled Literacy Intervention. Significant threats to validity are discussed as well as implications for future research.
