Abstract

Marijuana Legalization and Use: Support for marijuana legalization grew from 46% in 2010 to 50% in 2011. Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize recreational marijuana use with 53% of the vote. Drug use at Morgan State University is reported as minimal officially, but student reports suggest extensive use of marijuana and other drugs on campus. Drug Impact on African American Community: African American men disproportionately fill jails in Baltimore and the U.S., often due to drug-related offenses. The criminal justice system's focus on drug crimes heavily impacts African American communities, with statistics showing a higher arrest and incarceration rate for African Americans despite similar or lower drug use rates compared to whites. Prison Industry and Juvenile Incarceration: Baltimore plans to build a new youth jail costing $70 million despite a decrease in juvenile crime. Activists argue the prison system and new jail are part of a broader issue where African American youth are criminalized and funneled into the prison system. Campus Drug Culture and Reporting: Official crime reports at Morgan State University show few drug-related incidents, but investigative reporting reveals a different reality with widespread drug use and underreporting of incidents. The university's Clery report may not fully reflect the extent of drug-related issues on campus, with discrepancies in how incidents are reported and classified. Student Experiences and Perspectives: Various articles highlight individual experiences with drug use, dealing, and the consequences of drug culture on campus. Personal stories from students reflect the challenges and dangers associated with drug use, including addiction and encounters with law enforcement. Calls for Campus Safety Improvements: There are discussions about making Morgan State a closed campus to enhance safety, following several violent incidents involving non-students. The need for increased campus security measures is highlighted, with mixed opinions on how best to achieve a safer environment for students and staff. Societal Issues and Influences: The influence of hip hop culture on drug use among youth is examined, with concerns about how music glorifies drug use and its impact on young people's behavior and attitudes towards drugs. Articles discuss the need for awareness and education on the long-term effects of drug use and the importance of making informed choices.
