A novel noncircular gear design method is proposed in this study based on a modified higher order elliptical pitch curve for an infinitely variable transmission (IVT), and the power transmission efficiency of a noncircular gear pair is investigated. The modified higher order elliptical pitch curve is developed by using a motion function of the IVT to eliminate cusps between every two neighboring sections of the pitch curve, and improve smoothness and continuity of a motion function of the non-circular gear pair. Tooth profiles of the noncircular gears are obtained by the envelop motion of a rack cutter. The sliding velocity of every contact position on the tooth profile of either noncircular gear is calculated by using the relative curvature of the tooth profile. Power loss of the noncircular gear pair is calculated by integrating the product of the variable friction force and sliding velocity along the contact path of tooth profiles of the noncircular gears.
