dc.description.abstract | Increasingly diverse teams are crucial for tackling complex environmental challenges, particularly in cities and among historically marginalized communities. This study examines interdisciplinary collaboration in Baltimore, Maryland, involving scientists, faith-based groups, and local nonprofits. Together, they seek to address common questions about environmental restoration success and support local environmental education. Drawing on literature in environmental justice, liberation theology, and participatory approaches, this thesis highlights unique intersections. It explores emerging partnerships between scientists and faith leaders and examines the role of language in relationship-building through interviews. Reflexive analysis engages with two and a half years of implementation efforts between the Smithsonian and local organizations. The author advocates for radical listening, particularly among scientists, to foster diverse partnerships. Additionally, the author proposes reimagining academic structures to facilitate equitable community engagement. | |
