Abstract

Almost all graphics architectures today support Gouraud shading, linearcolor interpolation between vertices; system designers aim toward aPhong shading model, linear interpolants of surface normals with alighting model that supports both diffuse and specular components, as asuperior means of rendering accurate images. However, the Phongmodel still retains serious artifacts. In this paper, we point out theshortcomings of linear interpolation of normals, and present a surfaceinterrogation method for parametrically defined surfaces.
