Abstract

The results of this research project establish a relationship between the ventilation rate and the mixing factor in a model room system. The mixing factor is found to increase non-linearly with the ventilation rate, and has definite lower and upper limits. The data fit a sigmoidal curve, described by a mathematical model. The lower limit of mixing, due only to the process of diffusion, is equated to air flow, and the resulting mixing factor calculated from the equation of the curve. Applications to an actual laboratory room are discussed, including calculated exposures to personnel.
