Molecular genetic linkage maps of mouse chromosome 14 and chromosome 19 were constructed using interspecific backcross mice. Each of two interspecific backcrosses featured one or more phenotypic mutations. Gene based markers and anonymous repeat markers were mapped using these backcrosses and the (already established) Frederick interspecific backcross of the mouse genome. These molecular markers were oriented in comparison with the phenotypic mutant loci in order to more specifically pinpoint the genomic location of the mutant genes. The phenotypic mutation Roan (Rn) mapped to the distal end of mouse chromosome 14. The genes brachymorphic (bm), pale ear (ep), and ruby-eye (ru) were located with respect to molecular markers on mouse chromosome 19. Linkage maps such as these allow researchers to begin to positionally clone genes which may be homologous to human disease genes. With this knowledge, mouse models for human disease can be created and used to study a disease and develop potential treatments or cures.en_US
