Relationship of the Mumps Virus with Juvenile-Onset Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Relationship of the Mumps Virus with Juvenile Onset Diabetes Mellitus. (Under the direction of R. Marshall Austin, M.D., Ph.D., LCDR, USN). Information was obtained from a postal questionnaire that was distributed by the regional Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The resulting data were analyzed for the relationship of Juvenile-Onset Diabetes Mellitus (JDM) with the mumps virus, the interval between the onset of JDM with the mumps diagnosis compared to mumps vaccine, age comparisons, the relationship of sex of the child with the occurrence of JDM, and the incidence of the mumps virus in a control population that is matched socioeconomically. No correlation was found between the incidence of JDM and the mumps vaccine for this population studied. There was a marked peak of incidence of JDM at 8 and 9 years for females and a more even distribution of the incidence of JDM for males. The total number of JDM males exceeds JDM females by fifteen percent.
