dc.description.abstract | The interplanetary magnetic field is known to be highly helical. Although the detailed spatial structure of the fields has yet to be elucidated, the helicity spectrum has been conjectured to result from a random walk in direction of a constant magnitude magnetic field vector. We demonstrate that a model using three-dimensional fluctuations with variations in |B| gives a good fit to the helicity spectrum as well as to other properties of the interplanetary magnetic field. | en_US |
dc.description.sponsorship | s. This work was supported by the Space Physics Theory Program and another research grant at the Goddard Space Flight Center. MLG would like to acknowledge W. H. Matthaeus (WHM) and J. R. Jokipii (JRJ) for conversations which led to a major revision of the first version of this letter. The algorithm for numerically constructing the model magnetic fields was originally de- veloped by JRJ and was revised in 1980 by WHM and MLG to study the role of helicity in particle transport. It was refined in 1990 by JRJ, MLG, and DAR before being further revised for the work reported here. We are particu- larly indebted to JRJ for his continued interest in this work. We also wish to acknowledge N. F. Ness for making avail- able to us the Voyager magnetometer data. | en_US |
