Abstract
Sister Souljah's Visit:
Sister Souljah, an activist and writer, spoke at Morgan State University (MSU) on January 30, 1996. Her speech focused on issues within the African American community, contrasting African and American societal values, and addressing topics such as womanhood, manhood, and community values. She emphasized the need for a spiritual connection and criticized the portrayal of women in popular culture.
Black History Month Activities:
MSU's Office of Student Activities organized various events to celebrate Black History Month 1996, including trips to museums, film screenings, a concert by the Spirit Ensemble, and a Black Arts Festival. The aim was to honor and emphasize the contributions of Black Americans to society.
Celebrity Basketball Event:
The Kuumba program and the Baltimore Chapter of the Million Man March sponsored a celebrity basketball tournament to raise money and register Black voters. The event, however, was disappointing due to the absence of actual celebrities and the participation of unknown individuals instead.
Sports Updates:
The MSU Bears defeated the Howard Bisons in a basketball game with a score of 73-64. The article highlights the performance of key players and the enthusiastic support from fans.
The NBA section discusses various trades and the impact of rookie players on the season.
Entertainment:
Reviews and discussions on films and books, including the movie "Waiting to Exhale" and the book "Speak My Name: Black Men on Masculinity and the American Dream," which explore themes of Black identity and masculinity.
A spotlight on rising artist Shiro Stokes and her debut album "Can We Talk."
Commentary:
A critical look at Greek-lettered organizations at MSU, questioning their commitment to their original purposes of serving and unifying the community. The article calls for these organizations to recall their purpose and focus more on service and positive influence rather than social activities.
