Abstract
HBCU Newspaper Conference:
Morgan State University’s Spokesman staff announced plans to host the First Annual Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Newspaper Conference in March 1997. The conference aims to bridge communication gaps among HBCU newspapers and foster collaboration. Various committees have been set up to manage hotel and travel arrangements, communication with participating schools, and securing sponsors.
Freshmen Adjustments:
Freshmen at Morgan State University share mixed feelings about adjusting to campus life. While some students complain about crowded areas, long lines, and lack of activities, others appreciate the diversity, African American role models among faculty, and the vibrant campus atmosphere at night.
Campus Safety Concerns:
The recent deaths of two students have raised concerns about campus safety. Students are questioning the reliability of the campus security system and the infirmary’s ability to provide adequate medical care. Some students feel that common sense measures like using the buddy system and shuttle services can enhance safety.
Bear Necessity Card (BNC):
The administration introduced the Bear Necessity Card (BNC) as a modern, multipurpose identification card for students, faculty, and staff. The BNC serves as a library card, debit card, and access key for various campus facilities. Despite its convenience, some students have expressed concerns about privacy and the administration's access to their financial transactions.
Entertainment Reviews:
The issue includes reviews of new music releases and movies. The "Soul Food" soundtrack is praised for its emotional content and high-quality R&B and rap tracks. The movie "Set It Off," featuring four African American women, is highlighted for its unique storyline and strong performances by its cast.
Student Achievements:
The Golden Key Honor Society awarded scholarships to two outstanding students, Paula Melissa Jacob and Carol-Ann Simmons-Carey, for their academic excellence and involvement in campus activities.
