| dc.description.abstract | A PCR assay to measure HTLV-I/II proviral DNA was developed, validated, and applied to test a hypothesis relevant to HTLV associated disease pathogenesis. Due to the potential for functional interaction between HTLV-I/II and HIV regulatory proteins, HTLV-I/II provirus load might be expected to be higher in HTLV-I/II/HIV co-infected subjects compared to HTLV-I/II singly infected subjects. However, analysis of HTLV- I/II provirus load in 37 co-infected and 105 singly infected subjects did not show a significant difference in HTLV-I/II provirus load (p = 0.35) even when HTLV-I/II provirus load was adjusted for age and gender. | |
