Abstract
There are numerous benefits to students participating in community engagement activities. However, levels of participation among international students are known to be lower compared
to their domestic counterparts. Virtual reality (VR) has been shown to have the potential to
encourage behavioral change among individuals in a range of contexts. Researchers have yet to
examine the impact of virtual reality to promote community engagement among international
students. The aim of the research described in this dissertation is to investigate the role virtual
reality technology plays in encouraging international students to volunteer in a community that is
different from their own. Four studies are described as part of this work. This dissertation
contributes to three areas: (1) exploring the impact of VR on international students? attitudes and
behaviors, (2) identifying ways and suggestions on how to integrate VR within the servicelearning field, and (3) the design of a module on how to integrate VR with other classes
connected to service learning. Insights gained from this work have broad implications for
community engagement and institutions that host international students or prepare students for
study abroad experiences. This work will help support instructors who are interested in
integrating VR technology and community engagement within their field.
