Media, Race, and Political Indifference

Abstract

Growing up in a small-town school system, I personally felt one-sided when it came to what I was being taught in my history and literature classes. This became clearer when I then attended a small university in Virginia whose ideals differed greatly from my household and the small community in which I grew up. I learned I was unaware of what media has done to the world to create a lot of indifference, even hate, in communities. Using my knowledge from my undergraduate degrees I began to read into both sides of media reportage (music, news, sports, etc.) to arrive at a fuller understanding of the life-changing historical events that were being depicted by FOX, MSNBC, CNN, etc. This has continued into graduate school, where my exposure to scholarly articles further showed me how media operates, twisting words and telling only one side of a story in order to make money.
